Scar therapy

Many of us live with scars, but mostly without being aware of the impact scars have on our body and function beyond the purely aesthetic aspect.

Under our skin a connective tissue, called fascia, connects and holds our body together, stabilising muscles and organs. As a result of surgery or physical trauma, as the skin and underlying connective tissue is cut or broken, the fascia loses its ability to transmit kinetic energy smoothly. This can lead to discomfort, a feeling of stiffness, tightness, limitation in mobility, and even pain. The scar itself, often even after years have passed since the traumatic event, may feel numb, itchy, sensitive or painful.

Even where there is no residual pain or discomfort, nerve-endings in the affected area may have become hyper-sensitised and be sending dysfunctional signals to the central nervous system which, in return, will affect how the brain will manage muscle function. Scars are therefore often a root cause of dysfunction in muscle engagement leading to discomfort, loss of strength, instability and pain.

Scars are treated using only hands (no oil or cream) and very gentle strokes & techniques; the improvements achieved, both aesthetic and functional seem to be lasting. Generally a series of treatments is most effective, but even a single session can bring about profound change.

When a scar seems to affect motor control leading to muscle dysfunction and, as a result, mobility and stability issues, I would use neuro corrective therapy.
